Project shortlisted for HSJ Digital Awards
Posted: 26th January 2026
A digital inclusion project, delivered in partnership with Virgin Media O2 Business and NHS England, has been shortlisted for an award recognising its work to help members of the public across West Yorkshire get the most out of the NHS App.
The project stemmed from Virgin Media O2 Business’s ‘Connect More’ digital skills programme, which aims to build people’s confidence using digital skills, promote digital inclusion and remove barriers to accessing digital healthcare.
The initiative explored how retail spaces could be used to boost public engagement with the NHS App. O2 staff received dedicated training to help onboard individuals, supporting them to download and navigate the app and offering immediate, face-to-face support. This hands-on approach improves access to care and saves time for healthcare staff.
Health Innovation Yorkshire & Humber worked in partnership with Virgin Media O2 Business to help roll out the project across O2 stores in Leeds, helping to reach a broad and diverse population.
Graham Walsh, Clinical Director at Health Innovation Yorkshire & Humber said:
“I’m delighted that this project has been shortlisted, recognising digital inclusion as a fundamental pillar of equitable healthcare. This acknowledgement highlights the valuable role high‑street retailers can play in strengthening the nation’s digital confidence.
“Through our partnership, we are helping more people access healthcare with ease by increasing confidence in using the NHS App and reducing the risk of digital exclusion- ensuring services remain accessible to everyone.”
Charlotte Hails, Head of Public Sector Vertical Strategy, Virgin Media O2 Business said:
“Digital technology has the power to transform access to healthcare, but only if people have the skills, confidence and connectivity to use it. By working with the NHS to build everyday digital skills and increase use of the NHS app, we’re helping people take greater control of their health and access the support they need, when they need it.”
The HSJ Digital Awards celebrates excellence in the use of digital technology to drive innovation and transform health and care.
Winners will be announced at an awards ceremony in Birmingham on Tuesday 19 May 2026.
