Advances in AI and the Future of Work: Insights from NHS ConfedExpo
Posted: 30th July 2024
Every day we hear of advances in artificial intelligence (AI), with new systems taking on activities that, until recently, we thought only humans were capable of.
Catch up on this session, chaired by Richard Stubbs, Chief Executive of Health Innovation Yorkshire & Humber, at this year’s NHS ConfedExpo. The keynote was delivered by Dr. Daniel Susskind, Research Professor in Economics at King’s College London and Senior Research Associate at the Institute for Ethics in AI at Oxford University.
This session explored the increasing capability of technology, particularly AI, and how it can support us in the future to manage the demands on the health sector. Dr. Susskind provided a comprehensive exploration of AI’s current impact and what this technological progress means for the future of work – a topic which aligns with the new government’s agendas to harness technological advancements for public benefit.
For healthcare, the speech covered how AI’s ability to identify trends and patterns makes it a powerful tool for clinicians. We’re already seeing some incredible examples of that within the health sector for example, a system developed by Stanford University to identify whether a freckle could be cancerous, and Google’s DeepMind which can diagnose eye problems as accurately as leading ophthalmologists. AI’s ability to perform specific tasks traditionally handled by professionals presents a fundamental shift in how we approach workforce tasks within the healthcare sector.
